Share This: Music Theory, Should it be learned? Music theory is being able to understand modes and notes and a whole bunch of complicated stuff. As you can see, I never learned music theory. This article is going to be aimed more towards the beginner to intermediate players. If you were an expert, you wouldn’t need this advice. It Matters where You are in Your Playing If you’re a beginner, don’t even bother learning all of the details of the modes and everything. You should learn the scales and a little bit of the music theory of the scales. A LOT of professionals don’t know music theory, they just know the scales and with much practice, they know what notes they like. You’re a beginner, you don’t have to know the details of everything. Just get into it and enjoy yourself, you can decide later. If you’re an intermediate player then the decision is up to you. You really don’t have to bore yourself with it if it is that bad.
